Beginning Sewing Class Supply List (Gloria Young, gloriayoung@comcast.net or leave a message at BERNINA NORTHWEST, 540 N.E. Northgate Way, Suite D, Seattle, 206-523-ISEW (206-523-4739))

1.  Your zig-zag sewing machine in good working order, with a zig-zag presser foot, and an empty bobbin. Bring all presser feet and accessories that come with your machine, including the owner's manual. A few machines are available for use in the classroom for Gloria's class only (you need to reserve one by calling Bernina Northwest).

2.  An 8" pair of sharp dressmaker's shears for cutting fabric. A small pair of scissors or thread snips would be handy, but is optional.

3.  A seam ripper with a cover.

4.  Size 80/12 or 90/14 sharp sewing machine needles for woven fabrics (Schmetz microtex or denim sharps are recommended). Size 80/12 or 90/14 universal sewing machine needles for knit fabrics (such as fleece, sweatshirt, and t-shirt type fabric).

5.  Sharp silk pins with colored heads, a pin cushion, and an assortment of hand sewing needles.

6.  A fiberglass measuring tape and a 6" sliding hem gauge.

7.  A fabric marking pencil or chalk in a color that will show on your fabric.

8.  For Gloria's class only, you may pick any pattern that is marked "EASY" in the pattern book. Have a salesperson at the fabric store measure you so you purchase the correct size pattern (pattern sizes ARE NOT THE SAME AS ready-to-wear clothing sizes so this is VERY IMPORTANT if you want the garment to fit you).

9.  Purchase your fabric according to the chart on the back of the pattern. Have someone in the fabric store help you find the correct yardage amount for the garment view, your size, and the fabric width. IMPORTANT: PRETREAT THE FABRIC BEFORE CLASS by laundering it appropriately otherwise the garment may shrink or colors may run. Check on the fabric bolt end whether the fabric needs to be dry cleaned, hand washed, or is machine washable and/or dryable.

10.  Be sure you purchase everything you need for your garment, including good quality 100% polyester thread, interfacing to match the weight of your fabric (read the back of the pattern envelope to see if you need this), and buttons or zippers or drawstring or velcro or snaps or elastic (read the back of the pattern envelope under "NOTIONS" to see if you need any of these or any other items, interfacing amounts are sometimes listed under the fabric yardage for the garment view you choose). Bernina Northwest has the Mettler thread I recommend, the other notions must be purchased at a fabric store.

11.  A notebook and pen or pencil for taking notes during class and a colored highlighter pen for highlighting parts of the pattern instructions.

A Basic Sewing Kit containing items 2 through 7 is available at a discounted price at Bernina Northwest where the class is being held (540 N.E. Northgate Way, Suite D on the north side of the street in the same building as the Starbucks, between the Washington Mutual Home Mortgage Center and the building that is now becoming Green Lake Jewelry Works. You can enter the parking lot by going north on 8th Ave. N.E. and then turning left behind Green Lake Jewelry Works). Good quality fabric stores to go to are Pacific Fabrics and Nancy's Sewing Basket.
